History of Edfu Temple

The first stage of construction began under Ptolemy III and was completed under Ptolemy IV. The second stage, which added the main sanctuary and pylon, was begun under Ptolemy V and finished under Ptolemy VI. The third and final stage saw the completion of the innermost chambers and the addition of the outermost court; this work was carried out under Ptolemy XII. All this historical information will be more relevant and clear during our Egypt Cultural tours. The temple was built on top of much older ruins dating back to Ramses III, and was constructed over the course of 180 years under a variety of rulers during the Ptolemaic period in Egypt.

Despite its long history, much of the Edfu temple’s original decoration has been preserved. This is due in part to its remote location and also to the fact that it was used as a storage house for grain during medieval times, which protected it from looting.

Today, the Edfu temple is a popular tourist destination and must be seen for any traveler during our Egypt Easter tours.
